If you love the ocean and you're not afraid of big waves, you may enjoy a water sport like surfing. I have friends and acquaintances who go all the way to nice but faraway places to surf. I'm amazed at these people who can expertly ride the waves. Male friends in their boardshorts and bikini-clad gals girls looking like they're having fun surfing can be nice to watch. Even on TV and movies, you'll often see surfers who seem to glide effortlessly while approaching waves.

Expert surfers say they did not become good in the sport in the blink of an eye. The sport requires so much more than the right surfboard and apparel. Surfing requires determination to learn and practice. Individuals who are into the sport also need body and mind conditioning for surfing success. You can't just go into the water, approach big waves, and get all banged up, bruised, and knocked out by your board. Sure, friends may say the sprains, strains, cuts, and jellyfish encounters may be nothing compared to the thrill of surfing, but just the same, it's a sport you must be prepared for. You can't just observe how others do it without conditioning for surfing and training your body.

People I know got a professional coach and underwent a short training program. It's very important to feel safe on the surfboard. To do so, you must be physically conditioned and courageous enough to handle the rigors of surfing. Expert surfers and surfing instructors will remind the newbie that the three target areas that must be developed are flexibility, power & endurance, and core strength. Some surfers who are already into sports like swimming or simple activities like skateboarding have a good headstart. Doing some underwater training & swimming, particularly the crawl, will give you lung power. Expert surfers say swimming also improves the back & arms, and gives core strength. A 10-minute distance swim may be followed by several short sprints. Set aside time for rest at every sprint. The short sprints to copy paddling for a wave. Running and riding a bike likewise offer great leg conditioning for surfing using a shortboard.

Surfers also improve their flexibility by stretching. Doing push-ups, crunches, and swats, and building the abs and inner thighs are also important to help the surfer maintain balance and do the maneuvers on the water. All these can help tone your body and help you enjoy surfing for hours on end.
